Who Is Precisely Poe?
My name is Martha Womack, and I teach English and Theatre Arts at Fuqua
School in Farmville, Virginia. When I first began teaching American literature, I discovered so much conflicting information
about Edgar Allan Poe that I became confused about
what to teach my students. As I began to research the author's life
and literature, I realized that a horrible injustice had occurred,
and I became determined, like many others, to set the record straight.
The "Poe myth" portrayed a life that was spectacularly immoral
when in fact it was only dreary, miserable and to some extent dull.
Somehow I became captivated by the author and his writing; and so,
my mission continues.
You may e-mail your questions about the author
and his literary works. I won't write your papers for you,
but I will answer your questions or at the very least point you
in the right direction. I will also continue to review the information
on the Internet about Poe and make recommendations based upon my findings
as far as to the accuracy of the information and its usefulness in terms
of research and academic study. For this reason, this page will continue
to be under construction.
